Week 5 Reflection

For my journal reflections I will be using the Peter Pappas's The Reflective Student: A Taxonomy of Reflection.

Remembering
Week 5 was a good week. I was able to correct several APA, structure errors, and meet my professor.

Understanding
I learned more about APA and how to reduce APA citations and how to add more then one author to a citation.

Application
What I learned this week will greatly help me as I move forward in my doctorate studies and where I target my research.

Analysis
I really enjoyed one-on-one time with my professor. It's the first time in a year in the program where I have gotten that opportunity.  It was good to hear your feedback on my work and areas for long term improvements.

Evaluation

I believe I finished well, I put in additional time over the weekend and it made it much easier to finish this course.

Creation
I made several changes APA wise and finished my literature review

Personal Insights

I really enjoyed this course, it was fast but I feel I was able to improve my literature review and am seeing where I need to go in order to improve. I look forward to hearing what my advisor says. Thank you again Dr. Weaver for all of your help. Have a wonderful summer!

Week 4 Reflection

For my journal reflections I will be using the Peter Pappas's The Reflective Student: A Taxonomy of Reflection.

Remembering
Week 4 was a good week. I was able to get farther into my paper and was able to see several of my peers papers.

Understanding
I sent some time reviewing APA and was able to correct several of the errors I had on my paper.

Application
By getting the template done for my lit review it will make it easier in the future to use it as a template for other courses where I write papers (you know...all of them) =D

Analysis
I like the sharing method and being able to peer review other peer's papers. It helps me see where my strengths and weaknesses are.

Evaluation

I did give myself at least two hours a night to work on my lit review. I found myself blowing through an hour just reading articles. I have found that my topic has many sub topics I could add and explore at a later date.

Creation
Finish strong. I am planning to spend an hour a night finishing up my paper.

Personal Insights

I think in order to add more sub topics to my lit review I need to come up with my research questions I will ask for my dissertation. I find I have a hard time synthesizing information. I think I am by discussing experiments that were conducted but by looking at fellow student papers I see I need to do more. I think I worry it will be too much my voice/opinion.

Week 3 Reflection

For my journal reflections I will be using the Peter Pappas's The Reflective Student: A Taxonomy of Reflection.

Remembering
Week 3 was a very busy week. I found I missed parts of the outline formatting. Thank you again Dr. Weaver for your help with this. I also started to work on my literature review.

Understanding
By having 60 annotated bibliographies I have found a lot of information and sub topics about my research topic that I can now add to my literature review.

Application
Having these annotated bibliographies to reference as I work on my literature review will make the writing process much easier.

Analysis
I'm grateful Jennifer shared her paper on G+ as it helped me see where some of my formatting was not correct. I look forward to feedback from the first draft so I can improve on my paper for the following submissions.

Evaluation

Due to traveling this week for work I find myself behind with my first draft and am hoping to get as much done today (Sunday) as I can.

Creation

I plan to block at least an hour a day to work on my second draft starting Monday. I don't think an hour is enough time, however, it's a start.

Personal Insights
I find writing research hard. I find it is hard to be creative when it comes to theory, real life research, etc and time to analyze and synthesize the peer-review articles that I read. I'm hoping in time I am able to writer better, faster, and more effective. I plan to spend as much time as I can this week working on my second draft.

Week 2 Reflection

For my journal reflections I will be using the Peter Pappas's The Reflective Student: A Taxonomy of Reflection.

Remembering
Week 2 was a very busy week. I found myself having to read quicker through my peer-review articles in order to meet the deadlines.

Understanding
By having 60 annotated bibliographies I have found a lot of information and sub topics about my research topic than I have found in past courses that only required 20 peer-review articles. This will strengthen my literature review.

Application
Knowing how to use specific keywords, how to search databases, and find peer-review articles is a critical skill that I will use for my dissertation.

Analysis
This week I did my best to start early on my annotated bibliographies, however, kept finding myself wanting to dig more into my topic when I simply needed to get the remaining 40 done. I have met all of the deadlines (so far) so that's good!

Evaluation

Well tomorrow is Sunday and I will have a full day of work to finish my annotated bibliographies. I need to block off time each day moving forward to write at least 200 words for my literature review.

Creation

I plan to start this coming Monday on my outline. There is not a second to waste and I hope I can balance my jobs and writing =)

Personal Insights
I am wondering how many articles I can use on my dissertation that are longer than 10 years old? I'd of course only use older articles that focus on the theory, key research, and results. How many sub topics should be in my literature review for my dissertation? I have started to look at outline templates and am hoping to hit the ground running this coming Monday. On Sunday I was able to access to the Outline section in Moodle and will use the example template as well as my APA textbook.

Research in Week 1 Reflection

For my journal reflections I will be using the Peter Pappas's The Reflective Student: A Taxonomy of Reflection.

Remembering
Week 1 was a busy week! I am very thankfully Dr. Weaver opened the course early as this gave me a head start on creating my journal, meeting with the librarian, coming up with the literature review topic, and mapping out what a literature review is.

Understanding
Having 60 annotated bibliographies is stressful, however, I understand the reason we are gathering so many resources as it will help provide a sound literature review that contains a variety of peer-review research. It is also a good exercise in how to properly cite the article and write an annotated bibliography. I have written a couple of literature reviews in previous courses and I see my writing continuing to improve with each literature review I write. I also find myself understanding the IDT field better as I read more and more research and topics within it.

Application
Knowing how to properly find research, synthesize the information, and write a paper is a critical skill I will need for my dissertation. I will also need these skills for any articles I want to publish in the future.

Analysis
Dr. Dennis introduced me to new databases I had not looked at yet. This has helped me in finding better keywords and articles that are between five and ten years old. I find that as I read one article I find one to two additional articles to read from the reference page in my first article.

Evaluation

Waiting until Thursday to start reading and writing my annotated bibliographies was a poor choice and I paid for it on Saturday. I used articles in my previous course that were from the late 1990's and early 2000's and by taking this course have found newer research.

Creation

Moving forward I am spending as much as I can on Sunday to get ahead start on the second part of my annotated bibliographies followed by completing at least five each day morning forward. Finding articles, reading, and synthesizing them takes a great deal of time for me.

Personal Insights
I've found about 50 peer-review articles so far about various aspects of the Cognitive Approach to Instructional Design for Multimedia Learning and my only concern is there isn't a lot of current research. I was able to find a couple of articles from 2014 and 2015, however within these articles their references were from the early to late 2000's. Is this topic not as relevant anymore? I know as a professor and a designer there is still a lacking of understanding of what is an effective instructional multimedia piece and how it would be designed/created. Clearly I am stressed about finishing up the 60 annotated bibliographies. I woke up at 1AM yesterday and went downstairs and started to work thinking they were due any moment and that I didn't have them done. Once my brain turned on I realized I still had almost a full 22 hours left to complete the first part and went back to bed.
